Full Review

There are a number of wolf themed slot machines out on the market, but IGT’s Native-American themed Wolf Run, is arguably one of the biggest and most popular. It simply contains more paylines than its rivals, and has a better jackpot. The one drawback of Wolf Run is the graphics, which are somewhat cheap. This comes from the fact that this slot one of the many clones or sister games produced by IGT, which are virtually the same in every way, aside from their paint job and icons.

How to play Wolf Run slots online

This slot is available in most truly good online casinos that run IGT powered software. With 5 reels and a massive 40 paylines that can be activated or deactivated as a player sees fit, there is a lot of action to be had in this game. Rather bizarrely, the lowest coin value in the game is £1, with higher coin values of £2, £3, £4 and £5 also available. This makes it really simple to determine the minimum and maximum wagers for this slot, which start out with a floor of £1 per line, per spin; and end with a ceiling of £200 per spin.

The primitive icons used in this slot certainly aren’t of the greatest quality, but they do lend support to the overall theme that IGT is going for. That is, aside from the high playing card icons, whose bright colours and funky font make them seem out of place? But nobody cares for these icons anyway! There are both black and white coloured wolves in this slot, and two Native American icons, namely two totem faces. Payouts are always larger if gamers bag the wolves of the title.

Wolf Run bonus features

Though there is no bonus round as such, in this slot, there is a scatter symbol. Scatter symbols are identified by the having the word “bonus” written across them. Any three scatter symbols that a player accumulates, will cough up 2x the total bet staked by the player. Scattered wins are awarded only for symbols that appear on reels 2, 3 and 4, and so a double multiplier is all you are going to get. Scattered wins are also only paid out on the highest scattered win.

The wild symbol

The howling wolf sitting before the moon is the wild icon. This icon is will substitute itself for any symbol that it needs to, to ensure that the player has a large winning payline. It also doubles itself up as the largest paying symbol. The only symbol that the wild icon cannot substitute itself for is the bonus icon (scatter symbol).  The wild icon can also appear as stacked wilds during gameplay, although this is somewhat rare, which is rather disappointing.

Free Spins Round

It is quite unclear why IGT decided to abandon most of their special features in this slot, but it certainly doesn’t help its case. There is a free spins round in this slot, though it is hardly something worth writing home about. The slot will award free spins when three or more bonus/scatter icons are found on the reels. During the free spins round, 5 free spins are awarded to the player, which they can retrigger if they acquire another three scatter symbols during gameplay.

The Wolf Run jackpot

With the average payout percentage being 94.98% for this slot, players do have a reasonable chance of getting paid. However, big wins are somewhat harder to come by in this slot. Any player hoping to score the jackpot for themselves, is going to need to pull off 5 of the howling wolf wild icons on a payline, to pick up the top non-progressive jackpot of 1,000 coins. If the player has the maximum wager set, this will be worth £5,000 in real money.

Other notes on Wolf Run

This slot is far better than a lot of other wolf themed slots, but shortly after it was released, IGT released another wolf-themed slot, a sequel to this one even. The graphics aren’t the best, and the sound is disappointing. Also, although there are special features, they aren’t big enough and just don’t seem to reward players as much for their hard earned wagered cash.

A few more special features and perhaps some updated graphics would really make this slot a top game. Of course, if you love your wolves then perhaps this is irrelevant. Gamers seeking to enjoy a good retro slot machine themed on wolves will enjoy this, but for realism, this probably isn’t going to do it for you.
